The Greater Toronto Region and Southern Ontario have a unique combination of globally competitive clusters in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) and Creative Industries. This combination creates a unique foundation that will enable us to take advantage of the revolution brought on by 3D technologies that are transforming each of these industries, the way we interact with information and how we create new products.

Working with Ryerson’s Institute for Innovation & Technology Management, Be3D is creating a roadmap to form a robust 3D technologies cluster in the Greater Toronto Area. This roadmap will be informed through both secondary research currently being conducted as well as interactions with community members at Be3D programs and events. To be published in the Spring of 2017 this document will help to inform the next steps industry, academia and government need to collaboratively take to build an industry cluster focused on applying 3D technologies in the creative industries.

Steering Committee Meetings

To actively develop a sustainable cluster roadmap and guide the execution of the Be3D cluster development program a steering committee will be formed. This committee will be made of representatives from key stakeholder groups. Committee members will be asked to reserve 20 hours including three committee meetings during this program to:

1) Consult on workshop objectives
2) Review white papers and knowledge dissemination activities
3) Extend the reach of the cluster
4) Prepare a formal cluster development proposal for the GTA

Focus Groups

Hosted by the Ted Rogers School of Management's Institute for Innovation & Technology Management, these two small focus groups (12-15 participants each) will be designed to get in-depth feedback from industry on the state of 3D technologies in the GTA. Research’s will work with participants to ask questions on barriers preventing their growth and identify local strengths that can be leveraged in growing the cluster.

QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED
 Where the technology will be in the next 2-5 years?

 Social platforms have made many new technologies and apps successful, how applicable will 3D tech be to social media?

Can it integrate with/piggyback off of the success of Skype and/or Instagram?

 Are more training programs needed in this industry? What would they look like?

 Considering the current market for 3D tech: what are your thoughts on what can be mainstreamed?

 Is there a skills shortage in term of 3D tech talent?

 What are the main barriers to success currently? Ie. Tech itself vs. funding vs. finding an audience/market?

 What government incentives would help build a more robust 3D cluster in Toronto?

 What major (creative) industry collaborations lie in the future of 3D tech? Architecture, gaming, film etc.

Think Tank Sessions

Think Tank sessions are being developed in partnership with the Institute for Innovation & Technology Management, the Ryerson Transmedia Zone and We are Wearables Toronto and will be used to build network connections, facilitate potential collaborations and inform the final roadmap. By analyzing attendee discussions, survey responses and follow up questionnaire a clear understanding of what organizations are prioritizing in regards to 3D technologies will be apparent.
